Hello Good Karma!

So, I was inspired by my friend Kate to track the progress of my gardening this season!  I love gardening- the transformation from nothing to something, caring for things, little surprises (a new bloom, sprout, etc) and a chance to learn new things.  It's also a lesson in patience...something I need!! Finally, lounging, BBQing, and eating outside surrounded by my "fruits of labor" is lovely!
I realized that lately I've become a little negative towards my novice urban gardening experience.  It stems from wanting to have grass, a bigger yard, and NO RATS!  Yes, rats... So, for those of you that are unaware of "cement" city dwelling in Baltimore, rats are an issue.  They LOVE tunneling in pots (or chewing through them), eating bulbs/tomatoes (that my roommate and I planted a couple of years ago) and being a nuisance.  So, last summer I stuck to the flowers (even though some of my bulbs/small sprouts were eaten) and herbs that were planted high off of the ground.   I neglected the tomatoes that replanted themselves because I wasn't going to touch what the rats had.
BUT...this year in the spirit of good karma (smile), I'm going to tackle the rat "concern" and think of alternative ways to plant things.  Also, I am thankful for the house I have and all that comes with it (a bigger yard and grass can come later)! So, here's the start. I'm also hoping for some advice (even if it's just from Kate)  :)
